Virtually every digital audio device will have an internal digital clock. How Do My Digital Audio Devices Use Clocks? As the diagram illustrates, jitter at either of these ends of the audio chain can cause real problems. However, clock timing is absolutely critical whenever data is being converted between the analogue and digital domains, so the clocking of A‑D and D‑A converters is of fundamental importance to the quality of the audio. Whether that happens in real time or faster (or slower) is of no real consequence to the precision of the data transfer. So as long as the bit-clock points to somewhere within each static period before the data changes, the data value will be retrieved correctly. All that matters is that the value of each data bit can be recovered accurately, which is relatively easy because each data bit is transmitted for a finite period before the next data bit is sent. When digital audio data is passed from one device to another, clock jitter and drift are unimportant, provided they aren't excessive, as neither device is interested in the timing of the samples - it has no inherent meaning. To avoid this, a 'bit clock' is transmitted with the audio data to ensure that the receiver remains in sync with the transmitter and recovers each data bit correctly. The danger is that the receiving device could lose track of when each data bit stops and the next begins, potentially resulting in corrupted data values being received. As binary data, each bit can be either a zero or a one, and it is quite possible for several consecutive bits to have the same binary value. However, its story featured a stark tale involving a young boy named Serge and his female companion, Kid. The player's agency is relatively limited, but that was the standard for visual novels then and even today. Its gameplay was a then-novel mix of text-based dialogue choices and scripted cutscenes. Radical Dreamers, or Radical Dreamers: Nusumenai Houseki, was a visual novel sequel to Chrono Trigger exclusive to Japan. Even radical Dreamers is a technical marvel to look at. As a result, I think it is both healthier and fairer to view Chrono Cross not as a sequel to Chrono Trigger but instead, a fully realized release of one of Squaresoft's most obscure failed projects: Radical Dreamers. If you go into Chrono Cross expecting a logical continuation of Chrono Trigger, you will not appreciate anything it accomplishes. However, I think immediately jumping into Chrono Cross expecting a sequel to one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made "poisons the well" in more than one way. They were the ones that billed Chrono Cross as the successor of Chrono Trigger and included various references to the game within Chrono Cross. Admittedly, these grousing opening statements are partly Squaresoft's fault. Virtually every review starts its assessment with a piece about how different Chrono Cross compares to its supposed predecessor, Chrono Trigger. Whenever people try to assess Chrono Cross, I think most evaluations, especially negative ones, make a critical misstep from the onset. But for now, Jesus Christ, Chrono Cross sure is a video game! Part #1: The Legacy Of Radical Dreamers Maybe as this series progresses, I'll be able to wrangle the proverbial creative "mixed bag" that is this game. Nonetheless, I still do not know if I'd recommend the game to anyone, especially those with any nostalgia surrounding Chrono Trigger. However, the game is a monumental accomplishment and a work of art that speaks volumes of the creative " Golden Age" Squaresoft was ridding on during the PlayStation One. I still cannot fathom how this game's story and mechanics were allowed to ship in the incoherent mess they are, and to be honest, always have been. That aside, Chrono Cross is one of those games that, top-to-bottom, left me speechless. However, for various reasons, which we will discuss shortly, this series was a teeming nightmare to create. Initially, I had planned to air this series to mark the twentieth anniversary of its North American release. When I wrapped up my Final Fantasy XI series last year, I mentioned my next "long-form" blog series would detail my adventures with Chrono Cross. The colors in a sunset work the same way. The perceived color is a bright neutral, that is warmer or cooler depending on the relative strengths of the yellow and blue pigments. When these two colors fall onto adjacent cone cells in the retina, they create a sensation that simultaneously conveys blue and yellow. White light that falls on the pigment is reflected back as either blue or yellow. What’s going on? The colors in the print are optically blending. Here’s what I got:Īs you can see, there is no green! The colors blend directly from blue to yellow. I was using an opaque blue ink on top of dry yellow ink, so there was no opportunity for subtractive mixing. My insight came when I tried printing a blue-to-white gradient on top of a white-to-yellow gradient. This will make a smooth gradient with no green, but it’s not guaranteed to capture the luminous essence of a sunset. Combine enough colors and you will get a dark gray.įor a long time, I thought the only way to get a yellow-blue gradient with no greens was to gradually add orange to the blue until it desaturated to gray and then remove violet (or add yellow) until the gray transitioned to yellow. Combine more colors, and more of the spectrum is removed, leading to darker colors. In the subtractive color model, each pigment or dye in the mixture absorbs and subtracts out part of the spectrum. The reason the green appears is that paint mixing works on the principle of the subtractive color model. During a yellow-blue sunset, you may see some green in the sky, but not nearly as much as you will get by mixing yellow and blue paint on the canvas. If you start with blue at the top of the canvas and work your way down while increasing the yellow and decreasing the blue, you will get a lot of green in the sky. The challenge in painting a blue-to-yellow gradient is, as every school child knows, that yellow and blue paints combine to make green. In my case I aptly named it mailarchives. Mailsteward will populate it with the right tables. Then you create a new database via the PHP Mysqladmin that comes with MAMP. In MAMP Pro you need to allow external access to MySQL, but only from within your own system (this basically means applications other than MAMP can access the MySQL server. You need to take the following steps to allow Mailsteward access to MySQL. I use MAMP Pro on my laptop as a local web and mysql server, on which I run different things locally, like a blog based journal and a self-assessment survey tool. When installing Mailsteward it assumes you already have a MySQL server running on your system. It costs $99 one time, not cheap, but as I was paying for storage with Google as well, over time it pays for itself. There are three versions of Mailsteward, and I needed the Pro version, as it is the one that works with MySQL and thus can handle the volume of mail in my archive. (Although I may rethink that in the future, if I decide to also move out of Evernote, as after Gmail it is my biggest third party service that contains lots of valuable information.) I looked for something simpler, that just does what I need, putting e-mail into sql, and that is how I found Mailsteward Pro. I came across DevonThink, but that seemed a bit overkill as it does so much more than merely digesting a mail archive, and as such provides way too much overlap with my Evernote. So I searched for a way to more radically open my archive up to search. However, if I would like to do more with my archive, mine it for things, and re-use stuff by piping it into other workflows having it in Thunderbird would not be enough. That provides me with a similar access and search capability as I had for all that mail in Gmail. I could also import it into my mail client as a local archive, by dropping the MBOX file in the Local Folder of Thunderbird with Finder. MBOX is a text format so it allows itself to be searched, but that would only tell you that what you are looking for is somewhere in that 21GB file. After a day or so you get a download link that contains all your mail in one single file in MBOX format. Google lets you export all your data from its various services, including email.
